Module 1: Introduction to the HVAC Industry

Before you can master the trade, you need to understand the industry. Module 1 introduces you to the world of HVAC — where it came from, where it’s going, and what it takes to build a successful career in it.

At the end of this module, the student will be able to:

• Explain how HVAC systems have evolved from ancient heating methods to modern climate control technology
• Identify the key differences between residential and commercial HVAC systems
• Describe the career opportunities available in the HVAC industry
• Explain the importance of industry certifications, including EPA Section 608, NATE, and HVAC Excellence
• Recognize the role of industry organizations such as ASHRAE and ACCA
• Demonstrate knowledge of essential safety procedures including PPE, Lockout/Tagout, electrical hazards, and refrigerant handling
• Identify OSHA’s role in maintaining safe working conditions for HVAC technicians
